CRY, MY BELOVED MINDANAO With apologies to Raja Mattar and Alan Paton (originally published in the August 2008 issue of Philippine Times, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) By Ricardo J. S. Caluen Among my earliest memories of childhood in Iligan City was that of our yaya shooing us children back inside the house just before Angelus. As usual, we wouldn’t budge from our spot on the street where we were playing. Not until the helper shouts: “Hala, naa na ang Moros....gadala ug sako!” Here comes the Moro… Continue

Mindanao: A Legacy of History and Culture

Mindanao: A legacy of culture and history* By Ricardo Jorge S. Caluen The choice of Mindanao as motif of this year’s PIDC-led Philippine Independence Day celebration in Toronto is auspicious as it brings attention to a region in the country that sadly remains underrated, if little understood, in many respects. Which is sad to note, considering the region’s geography and its major contribution to Philippine economy, history, and cultural heritage. Comprising more than one-third of the country’s… Continue

Oh, so you're sisters with Paeng's wife. I didn't know that. Where exactly in Agusan are you ? I have plenty of relatives there, the Salise and Fudalan families. If you are in touch with Lilagre (she has a nickname....I forget it now....one of her sisters---I believe it's Gina---was a student of mine at IIT), do give my regards to her and her parents. Also, please ask her to let her Mom and her Tita Judith know that my mommy had a stroke 3 years ago in Toronto. She's OK except that her left side is affected, leaving her wheelchair-bound.

Cheers!
